When modern photographers think of old glass, particularly old Soviet glass, there’s a certain expectation that comes with it. The Mir-24M is perhaps the best challenger to those stereotypes of old Soviet lenses – it is every bit a modern lens as it is vintage.

With a 35mm focal length and an aperture of f2.0, the Mir (or, ‘Мир’ in Russian, meaning World) was the highlight of a series of wideangles developed primarily around the 70’s and manufactured through to after the fall of the Soviet Union

Manufactured at the Zenit (or KMZ) plant, the copy I managed to get my hands on is from 1985, and is in perfect condition, almost as new. It’s far and away my favourite lens, and in this review, I explore exactly why.
